Duathlon!

The Room 11 children put their best foot forward this past Tuesday, as they energetically ran and swam in the duathlon.  We were very proud of them all. It was especially exciting, though, to have such high success in our class. Kian came first and Oskah came third in the year 2 boys' duathlon. Lily-May achieved 2nd and Stella achieved 3rd in the year 2 girls' duathlon. Fantastic effort, guys!

Discovery Time

Room 11 love 'Discovery Time'. It is a block where the children have a wide variety of opportunities to develop the key competencies through activity-based, child-directed learning. The following photos are some examples of the exciting learning activities we have been doing.

Luca and Charlie creating animations on the iPads.

Isabel, Lily-May and Izzy designing a car park with elevators.

Ryan designing his boat with its propellers.

Samantha and her creation.

Marvel and CG with their powerful weapons.

Zac with his zooming rocket and Oskah looking pretty impressed!

Kalan, Kian, Mandy, Ruby and Arneeka making up and acting out their own exciting play about three friends (Mandy, Ruby and Arneeka) going for a walk and being attacked by a bad cowboy. The heroic sheriff (Kian) then comes to the rescue and handcuffs the villain (Kalan). The class thoroughly enjoyed watching their fantastic performance!

Daisy with her turtle she drew and cut out.

Oskah drawing his spaceship, using shells (to rub over) and crayons to create an interesting pattern.

Class Newsletter - 04/02/13

Dear Parents /Caregivers,

Welcome back to school for 2013.

I have met some of you already and look forward to talking to you all in more depth about our classroom programme at the Setting the Scene meeting on Wednesday 13thFebruary at 5.30, starting in our school hall. This is a meeting about what’s happening at school, followed by an outline of routines and programmes in individual classes.

Our library day is Friday and we will be swimming everyday.

By mid-next week, children will start bringing home reading books and homework will start fully in about week 3.

In the meantime, please check out our new class blog http://tps2013room11.blogspot.co.nz/. As well as having lots of useful learning sites, it will give you an insight into what is happening at school.

I will generally be available in the classroom before and after school for a chat. So, please feel free to call in. Alternatively, please e-mail me at - kthorne@tauranga.school.nz

Star Time/Discovery Time:
In the first block (8.50-10.00), from Monday-Wednesday, we will be running an activity-based programme with a wide range of activities across many different learning areas.

We would appreciate any materials the children can use for creating things. Boxes, tubes, plastic tops, small pieces of fabric, beads, ribbon, buttons etc…

If you have any particular skill or interest that you could share with the children we would love to hear from you. For example last year a parent came in for a couple of sessions to teach the children how to make soap.

Regards,

Miss Thorne
